Expanding Access to Wild Beauty in West Sonoma County

In the heart of West Sonoma County, Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and community-powered stewardship, and it creates a public park that spans the Pacific Ocean to the Russian River from Shell Beach, through Sonoma Coast State Park and Willow Creek Addition, to the town of Monte Rio.

Originally protected in 2020 with the 515-acre Dutch Bill Creek acquisition, the park grew dramatically in June of 2025 with the addition of 1,517 acres in a landmark expansion that connects generations of conservation and trail advocacy.

2025 Expansion: A Turnkey Trail System

This recent expansion builds on a strong foundation, with an established network of roads and singletrack trails developed and maintained for decades by the Gianni Cycling Association. Thanks to their vision and long-term stewardship, the new acreage arrives nearly turnkey from a trails perspective, allowing for immediate public access and enjoyment.

Redwood Trails Alliance is supporting Gianni Cycling Association, to ensure interim trail improvements are in place for visitors while Sonoma County Regional Parks develops new maps, signage, and long-term management plans.

A Multi-Use Experience

Monte Rio Redwoods offers an extensive system of trails to explore. Some narrow singletrack trails have been thoughtfully designated for user-specific travel, such as bike-only or hike-only, to support user safety and preserve trail quality. There is an abundance of tranquil and connected service roads to accommodate shared use by all visitors. Trail designations are clearly marked on maps and will be posted on signage currently being installed. Please follow these guidelines and ride or hike responsibly.
