About Don Smith

Don was first introduced to trail advocacy and sustainability as an avid mountain biker in the mountains of Santa Cruz CA during the mid 80’s. Since that time, mountain biking, trail running and hiking – experiencing the outdoors – has been a central part of maintaining health and balance in his life. This balance is shared by his wife and their now, adult sons.

As the Director of Community Well-Being and Engagement for a rural healthcare system he sees the connection between thoughtful trail infrastructure and accessibility as a key component of positively impacting the health metrics of rural communities. Serving on several boards that focus on economic development in rural Lake County he also advocates for trail development that invites and supports outdoor tourism as means of economic development.

Working with and supporting Lake County Parks and Recreation’s Master Plan and Konocti Regional Trails, he is excited about the future of multi-use trails in the county, a future informed and shaped by Redwood Trail Alliance’s resources and expertise.
